Following the recent discovery of crows infected with highly pathogenic avian influenza in Kyoto and Osaka prefectures, measures to keep schoolchildren away from birds have been taken in western Japan.
Authorities, however, have criticized the measures, saying people should not overreact to the bird flu outbreak because humans rarely get infected with the virus, adding that reducing the already limited places where children can come into contact with animals is a greater problem.

In its efforts to distribute cheap and easy-to-use drugs, the global fight against AIDS has encountered serious roadblocks in the past. Local governments and pharmaceutical companies have often fought against generic AIDS drug distribution. Now, the US – which has been accused of slowing the process more than any other country – is willing to give in a bit to quell global criticism. At the World Health Organization annual meeting that begins today, the US is opening the door to quick approval of generic drugs and greater research into drug cocktails that could be easier to use for illiterate or poor consumers. The traditional AIDS drugs require a level of precision that is considered to be a deterrent for less-educated AIDS victims. At the meeting, there is also to be discussion on how to distribute drugs to the villages and towns that are inaccessible by car or other means of modern transport. The war against AIDS has often had to struggle against these sorts of difficulties.; However, if the US is actually showing signs that they are willing to cooperate with international organizations, the fight could get a lot easier.

One can academically appreciate the fact that every electric motor in the world works because of magnetism. One can reflect on the fact that every transformer uses it, too. CRT monitors, TVs, brushless DC motors, power meters, modern welding gear and engine ignition timing systems, various vending machines and umpteen other gadgets use permanent magnets. And electromagnetism has a hand somewhere in making practically every other electronic device work.
